Download Our Free Bystander Intervention 101 mini Toolkits!

Harm and violence, such as harassment, bullying, discrimination, and abuse, often occur in front of others, in everyday spaces: schools, workplaces, social gatherings, and online.

The people witnessing the harm are known as bystanders and what bystanders choose to do or not do can have a profound impact. Bystander intervention helps break the cycle of silence and harm – when someone chooses to step up, the narrative changes.

Even small actions, like offering support or disrupting a harmful moment, can help prevent escalation, affirm someone’s dignity, or shift the tone of a situation.  When one person intervenes, others often feel more empowered to do the same. Over time, these choices help shift the culture toward safety, respect, and accountability.

You don’t need to be perfect to make a difference. You simply need to be willing to notice, to care, and to act when you can. Whether you’re a friend, coworker, student, teammate, or someone just passing by, each of us will encounter moments where we can choose to look away or to speak up. Want to learn more?
